Benefits of meditation

Meditation is one of my most valued rituals. Since I started incorporating meditation into my daily practice about a year ago, I have noticed major changes in all areas of my life.

Consistent meditation has been linked to:

  • Boosting mood - reducing stress and anxiety

  • Improved sleep

  • Lowering inflammation

  • Increased gray matter in the brain (part of the brain where processing is done) - better cognitive function

  • Improved focus and concentration

  • Improved memory and learning - due to increased cortical thickness of the hippocampus

  • Can slow the cellular ageing process - boosts telomeres and telomerase activity

I personally have always come back to my meditative practice as it allows me to hold a safe space for internal reflection. Giving myself the space to sit in my own thoughts without judgement. Watching my thoughts come that were hidden underneath layers of defensiveness, acknowledging them from a third-person perspective, and watching them leave.

If you are wanting to try meditation out for the first time and don't know where to start. Here are some tips:

  • Keep it short (even if it's just a few minutes!)

  • Try using apps with guided meditations such as headspace, calm or insight timer!

  • Try practices such as breathwork or visualisation

With love,

B
