What are adaptogens?

Adaptogens are non-toxic plants, herbs and roots which have a main purpose to help balance, restore and protect the body.

Continuing on from my last post, I mentioned how I incorporate these into my routine and diet. The reason for this is because they increase the state of non-specific resistance of stress and decrease sensitivity to stressors within the body. Therefore, their bi-directional action achieves a higher level of tolerance to these stressors in many major systems within the body, maintaining the body's homeostasis and balance.

Adaptogens have numerous benefits such as; decreasing fatigue, lowering cortisol levels, regenerating brain cells, alleviating depression and anxiety, preventing and fighting cancer - just to name a few.

This is why they are so incredibly beneficial in maintaining overall wellbeing !

Some of my favourite adaptogens are:

Mushrooms: many different varieties which all offer different benefits; lion’s mane, cordyceps and chaga are some of my favourites in tinctures (shitake are my favourite in meals).

Maca: this is a powerhouse of nutrients containing seven essential amino acids and lots of fibre. It has been found to be a great use when trying to balance sex hormone levels and is also known to boost libido!

Liquorice root: an anti-inflammatory, reduces stress, helps heal adrenal fatigue. (I have a peppermint and liquorice root tea most nights!)

Nettle leaf: helps with adrenal fatigue and prolonged stress, improves concentration levels, boosts the immune system, liver and heart health. In addition, enhancing fertility in both men and women. (I sometimes add this to my herbal tea mentioned above).

Tumeric: boosts brain function and reduces depression (easy ways to add to your diet is through curries, juices, etc)

Goji berry: boosts energy, physical and mental performance, calmness, and sense of well-being, and can also improve sleep

Rhodiola (aka "golden root"): helps ease anxiety and fatigue, anti-aging and cancer-fighting effects

Ginseng (comes in many varieties; including Asian White, Asian Red, and American White): are great for those seeking an extra boost of energy without the jitters that can come from caffeine

Ashwagandha (withania): decompresses the nervous system, energises and relaxes your body, by regulating cortisol, offering thyroid support through your brain-adrenal (HPA) axis

Schisandra (aka "the five flavoured berry"): promotes stamina, improves concentration/memory/motivation

How long before you notice benefits?

Everyone is different, some feel instant effects whilst others may take 2-3 weeks. It all depends on the mind and body, diet, emotional/mental and physical situations. If you are new to adaptogens, be patient and let them do their magic!

With love,

B
